Placement Tips for Better Success
Below are just a few tips to help you achieve better success when placing you Mineral Licks:
1. Location, Location, Location
Near bedding or travel corridors: Place the lick close to areas deer naturally move through, like trails between bedding and feeding areas.
Edge habitats work great — transition zones where woods meet a clearing or food plot.
Don’t put it in wide-open areas where deer feel exposed. Tuck it in with some cover nearby.
2. Good Camera Angle
Set up your trail cam 10–15 feet away, angled downward, facing north if possible (so sun doesn't blind your lens).
Place it at waist to chest height (around 3–4 feet).
Clear brush and branches so your camera has an unobstructed view and that the wind won't set your camera off easily.
3. Prep the Site
Dig a shallow hole or scrape a spot down to bare dirt.
Drop the mineral rock right in or break it into chunks.
Some hunters add a little loose mineral mix or pour water over it to get the scent going.
4. Start Early in the Year
Spring and early summer is prime time: deer are recovering from winter and bucks are in antler-growing mode.
Year-round is fine too — they'll use it more in warmer months, but it can still hold attention in the fall.
5. Stay Legal
Double-check local regulations. Some states ban mineral licks during hunting season or altogether. Even if you're not hunting over it, trail cam sites still count in some areas.
Bonus Tip:
Pair your mineral lick with a small water source nearby — even just a puddle or low spot — and deer will stay longer at the site. Happy Hunting!
